Does a Lifetime Faucet Warranty Cover Labour? What Moen and American Standard Cover

The quick answer: In the two lifetime faucet warranties we read, no. Moen and American Standard both supply the replacement part free of charge, and both exclude the labour to install, repair or replace it. Labour falls under the installer’s own warranty, if the installer gives one. With Bytown, a faucet we supply and install is covered by our 5 year written warranty on labour and supplied materials.

A lifetime faucet warranty sounds like the faucet is covered for life, and the part is. What it does not pay for is the plumber’s time. This guide sets out what two major brands’ published faucet warranties cover, who they cover and what voids them, working from the warranty text itself.

Why Doesn’t a Faucet Warranty Cover Labour?

A manufacturer warrants its own product. The work of installing it belongs to whoever did the installing, so it sits under that installer’s warranty, not the manufacturer’s. Both warranties say so directly: neither pays labour charges for installation, repair or replacement.

Moen goes a step further and excludes damage caused by installation error, whether the work was done by a contractor, a service company or the owner. A badly installed faucet is a problem for the installer’s warranty. Our guide to bathroom renovation warranties explains how the contractor’s warranty and the manufacturer’s warranty fit together.

What Voids a Faucet Warranty?

Both warranties exclude damage from installation error, abuse and misuse, harsh or abrasive cleaners, and parts that are not the maker’s own. Moen also excludes faucets bought from sellers it has not authorized. American Standard also excludes improper care, aggressive water or air conditions, and normal wear and tear.

The cleaner rule is the one people miss. Moen names cleaners containing abrasives, alcohol or other organic solvents, so check the label of whatever is used on the finish.

Keep the Receipt, Especially When the Faucet Comes With the Job

Both warranties ask for the original sales receipt from the original owner. When a contractor supplies the faucet, that receipt is in the contractor’s hands. American Standard’s warranty extends to the first property owner the faucet was bought for, and Moen’s text does not address contractor purchases, so ask for the brand, the model and a copy of the receipt when the job is finished.

What Happens to a Faucet Warranty When You Sell the House?

It ends with you. Moen’s runs for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, and American Standard’s is not transferable to later owners, apart from its contractor exception. A buyer inherits the faucet but not the warranty.

Do Provincial Rules Change Any of This?

Possibly, at the edges. Moen’s own warranty notes that some provinces do not allow incidental or consequential damages to be excluded, so some of its limits may not apply everywhere. In Ontario, the Consumer Protection Act also deems services to be of a reasonably acceptable quality, which applies to the installation. Our renovation warranty guide covers the Ontario rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Faucet Warranties: Your Questions, Answered

Does a lifetime faucet warranty cover labour?

Not in Moen’s or American Standard’s published warranties. Both supply the replacement part free of charge and exclude the labour to install, repair or replace it.

Who pays to replace a faulty faucet cartridge under warranty?

The manufacturer supplies the part. The labour to fit it is not covered by the manufacturer, so it falls to the owner unless the installer’s own warranty covers the work. With Bytown, a faucet we supply and install is covered by our 5 year written warranty on labour and supplied materials.

Is a faucet warranty transferable when you sell your house?

Not in these two. Moen’s runs while the original purchaser owns the home, and American Standard’s is not transferable to later owners apart from its contractor exception.

Do you need the receipt for a faucet warranty claim?

Yes. Both warranties ask for the original sales receipt from the original owner.

What voids a faucet warranty?

Installation error, abuse, misuse, harsh or abrasive cleaners and non-genuine parts, in both. Moen also excludes faucets from sellers it has not authorized, and American Standard excludes normal wear and tear and aggressive water conditions.

Does the warranty still apply if a contractor bought the faucet?

American Standard’s extends to the first property owner the faucet was bought for. Moen’s covers the original consumer purchaser and does not address contractor purchases, so keep the receipt and the model number.
