Can You Tile a Shower Ceiling? Backer, Membrane, Mortar and Grout

The quick answer: Yes, a shower ceiling can be tiled, but it is the hardest surface in the shower to tile well. It needs a tile backer rather than drywall, a non-sag mortar, and every tile fully bedded. Schluter, which makes the KERDI membrane, requires a membrane on the ceiling of an enclosed or steam shower, and a steam shower ceiling must also be sloped. If those details are more than the job calls for, acrylic ceiling panels are the simpler waterproof option.

This guide is about ceramic and porcelain tile set in mortar on the ceiling above a shower or tub. It relies on what the board, membrane, mortar and grout makers publish about their own products, and it says where their instructions differ by type of shower.

Tile vs Acrylic Panels on a Shower Ceiling

QuestionTile ceilingAcrylic ceiling panels
Waterproof on its own?No. Tile and grout absorb water, so the membrane behind them does that job.Yes. The panel itself is waterproof.
What goes behind itCement board or a waterproof foam board, fastened for the weight.Moisture-resistant drywall.
InstallationComplex. Every tile is set overhead against gravity.Easy. Large panels with few joints.
UpkeepModerate. Cement grout is porous, and sealing it is recommended.Very low. Wipe it down.
Choose it whenThe tile runs up the walls and the ceiling has to match, or it is a steam shower built for tile. You want a ceiling that keeps water out with the least to maintain.

Our shower ceiling panel guide compares the two finishes in more detail. Acrylic and tile are the two ceiling finishes we install.

What Has to Be Behind a Tiled Shower Ceiling?

A tile backer, not drywall. CGC, which makes Sheetrock panels in Canada, says its moisture-resistant gypsum panel is not suitable as a tile base in wet areas such as tubs and showers that get direct water exposure. Its Durock cement board, by contrast, is sold as a water-durable tile base for tub and shower areas, and its instructions cover ceilings. Waterproof foam boards such as Schluter KERDI-BOARD are another tile base made for showers. Our guide to shower ceiling boards compares the boards that go behind tile and behind acrylic panels.

Weight matters overhead. CGC caps the dead load of a Durock ceiling system at 7.5 pounds per square foot. Everything hanging from the joists counts toward a load like that, so the tile’s weight is something to check on its spec sheet before the board goes up, not after. On a ceiling, CGC also spaces the board’s fasteners closer than on a wall, at most 152 mm (6 inches) apart.

Does a Tiled Shower Ceiling Need a Waterproof Membrane?

Schluter, which makes the KERDI membrane, sets this out for its own system: on the ceiling the membrane is optional for showers and bathtub surrounds, required for enclosed showers, and required on walls and ceilings in steam showers.

That is the maker’s minimum. Our own view is stricter for tile. Tile and grout absorb water, so a tiled ceiling relies on the membrane behind it to keep moisture out of the structure, and skipping it is one of the most common reasons a shower fails early. Our guide to shower waterproofing explains what sits behind the tile.

How Is Tile Set on a Ceiling?

Custom Building Products, a tile mortar and grout maker, publishes guidance for tile on walls and overhead. For ceilings it says the framing and sheathing must be suitable and well fastened, and it recommends a premium non-sag mortar meeting ANSI A118.15 T. A non-sag mortar holds the tile in place while it cures instead of letting it slip.

It also strongly recommends flat back-troweling each tile, once called back-buttering: a thin coat of mortar on the back of the tile as well as on the board, so the tile is fully bedded. Hollow spots are a bigger risk on a ceiling than on a wall, because gravity works against the bond the whole time.

Is Grout Waterproof?

No. MAPEI, which makes grout, describes basic cement grout as the most porous kind, meaning it absorbs water and stains the most readily, and recommends sealing it after installation. It calls epoxy grout the best option for a shower because it is the most water- and stain-resistant, so resistant that it will not accept a sealer.

Sealing helps grout resist stains and water, but it is not a waterproofing layer. Keeping water out of the ceiling is still the membrane’s job.

What Changes in a Steam Shower?

Steam reaches every surface, so the ceiling gets the same protection as the walls. Schluter requires its membrane on walls and ceilings in steam showers, and says steam shower ceilings are sloped so condensation does not drip on the person in the shower. Custom Building Products says a tiled steam shower needs a low-permeability waterproofing membrane, specially designed movement joints and a ceiling slope of 2 inches per foot.

Do Not Forget the Fan

On a tiled ceiling, the porous grout lines are where a damp room shows first. Steam has to leave the room, and that is the fan’s job. Our guide to bathroom ventilation covers fan sizing and duct runs.

Shower Ceiling Tile: Your Questions, Answered

Can you put tile on a shower ceiling?

Yes. It needs a tile backer such as cement board or a waterproof foam board, a non-sag mortar, and each tile fully bedded. Schluter requires a membrane behind it in an enclosed or steam shower.

Do you need to waterproof a tiled shower ceiling?

Schluter makes its KERDI membrane optional on the ceiling of an ordinary shower or bathtub surround, and required in an enclosed shower or a steam shower. Because tile and grout absorb water, we treat the membrane as part of any tiled shower ceiling.

Is grout on a shower ceiling waterproof?

No. Cement grout is porous and absorbs water. Sealing it is recommended, and epoxy grout is the most water-resistant option, but the membrane behind the tile is what keeps water out.

Can you tile over drywall on a shower ceiling?

Not where the ceiling gets direct water. CGC says its moisture-resistant gypsum panel is not suitable as a tile base in wet areas such as tubs and showers with direct water exposure. Cement board or a waterproof foam board is used instead.

How heavy can tile be on a shower ceiling?

It depends on the board and the framing. CGC caps the dead load of a Durock cement board ceiling system at 7.5 pounds per square foot, so add up the board, mortar and tile, and check the tile’s weight on its spec sheet first.

Is tile or acrylic better for a shower ceiling?

Acrylic panels are waterproof on their own, have few joints and need very little upkeep. Tile suits a shower where the walls are tiled and the ceiling has to match, as long as the membrane, mortar and fastening are done for an overhead install.
